Demo tomorrow!

The demo is tomorrow. Hopefully I won't mess up my form and if I do, hopefully I can fake it.

For acts of kindness: I held the door for someone, I let someone in ahead of me in line and I took Julia to the childrens festival.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, some leftover past and veg, a veggie burger with a few fries and a bagel with cream cheese. I drank half a cup of coffee, 3 cups of tea and 8 glasses of water and 1 beer.

Diet changes

One thing I've noticed since making all of these diet modifications is that I'm realizing what bothers my system more. I'm becoming more aware when I eat something bad. It's almost like I'm becoming more sensitive to the stuff I cut out. For example, I've cut way back on the grease I eat, now I'm finding if I eat a greasy meal (say chinese food), it really upsets my system. Same with coffee, now that I barely drink it, if I have more than 2 cups, I'm twitching out.
It makes me wonder what this stuff was doing before when I didn't even notice. My body must have built up a tolerance to crap. I'm glad now that my body is becoming more vocal, or maybe I'm just actually listening now.

For acts of kindness: I filled my husbands car up with gas, I bought my sister lunch and a coffee, I made small talk with a sales lady at the camera shop and I gave my cat and dog treats.

Today I consumed: one piece of peanut butter and jam toast, some macaroni with vegetables, some minestrone soup, some pasta with chicken and veg and a bagel with cream cheese. I drank 3 cups of tea, a earl grey latte and 8 glasses of water and half a beer.

Priorities

Got to spend the day with Julia which was nice.
I'm a little nervous about the demo this weekend. I don't feel like we are prepared enough as so many of us have been away for practices. We'll have to see how it goes this Thursday.
One thing I've learned about demos (from the big-cheese himself) is that a big part of being in them is being at the right place at the right time and being prepared. You don't know when the right time will be but you know the right place (the kwoon) and you can always try and be prepared. Two out of the three things are in our control.
If you want to be in a demo, you show up to all of the practices and hope that your stuff is good enough and needed. Sometimes you won't be needed, sometimes you will. The idea is that we all show up and build a demo out of the best of us. You can't show up to practices once in a while and expect to get in the demo.
That's one of the most difficult things about putting together a demo....consistent attendance. If you don't get the same people showing up then you have to start from square one every time and your demo suffers. Consistent attendance is a direct product of commitment and priorities. If you are not 100% committed, you won't show up 100% of the time. Likewise, if something else (say work) is a higher priority, then that will take up your time instead.

You have to decide your priorities for yourself. For me, this past weekend my work was more important so I was away for practices. That choice meant that I missed training time and also affected the training time of my team-mates. The choice of priorities is a personal one that you have to live with, but there are consequences. If I consistently place training and practices as a lower priority, then I will get passed over for demos and I won't progress. To achieve success, you have to put in the time.

I think a lot of us have been putting the I Ho Chuan as a lower priority. If we want to pass and succeed then we need to put it number 1 on our list.....
If we truly embrace the idea of the I Ho Chuan then we will realize that by putting it as the first priority we are not bumping our work or family down the list, we realize that the success of the I Ho Chuan upholds our families, work and lives. If we truly embrace it and become better people as a whole, then every aspect of our lives will benefit. We will be better family members and better workers. You can't compartmentalize things. Kung-Fu permeated every aspect of your whole life, not just your kwoon life and when you realize that, then prioritizing is easy.

Today for acts of kindness I made coffee for my husband and made his lunch, I cuddled my dog and cat and I found my husbands keys.

Today I consumed: a bowl of oatmeal with nuts and raisons, some left over chinese, some pasta with broccoli and sausage and 3 chocolate chip cookies. I drank a cup of decaf coffee, 4 cups of tea and 6 glasses of water.

I'm back!

May 24
Arrived at the hunting lodge. Very pretty out here, but very remote. You have to drive all the way past Hudson Hope and then go by boat for another 40 minutes or so. The mountains are so beautiful! The place is pretty rustic….the generators shut off at night so all the world is darkness and you have to build a fire in your cabin to keep warm (not that it's really cold). The only thing that kind of bothers me is the hunting culture up here. There are a few hunters staying at the lodge right now trying to get some bear. I don't really agree with it….the whole hunting for sport thing. Seems like such a waste of life. Hunting for food, I get that and agree with that, but killing something just to say you killed it is a terrible waste and really sad I think. It bothers me.
For acts of kindness today I held the elevator for someone, I held the door x 2 and I helped carry some heavy gear.
Today I consumed: an egg and sausage, one and a half pieces of rye toast and a couple of hashbrowns, some beef jerky, a granola bar, an orange, a piece of cake, half a pork chop with salad, potatoes and home made buns and chili. I drank half a cup of coffee, a cup of juice, 2 cups of tea and 4 glasses of water.

May 25
Worked a long day on the shore of Willeston Lake. Described 70m of outcrop and took samples and gamma readings. Got a lot accomplished, but feel exhausted. Good day though. Tomorrow I will be helping Carolyn with her stuff. Should see some great fossils.
Managed to get some tai chi done too. Luckily I was ahead on the pushups and sit-ups so I didn't have to do any today…body so tired.
For acts of kindness I opened the garbage can for someone, I found a lost knife for someone and I complimented our hostess's cooking (it's amazing!).

Today I consumed: half a sausage, a piece of home made bread, cheese and veg omelette with ham, a ham and cheese sandwich, a cookie, a muffin, half an apple, some hamburger in gravy with cauliflower, macaroni salad and mashed potatoes

May 26
going home tomorrow! Have to work a half day though so I don't know if we'll make it home in one day. Excited to see the little one again! Seems like forever!
For acts of kindness: I helped carry some heavy things, I complimented the cook and I built the fire in the cabin.
Today I consumed: an egg, a sausage, some fruit, a pancake, a sandwich, an apple, a muffin, 2 cinimun buns, half a steak with baked potato and veg. I drank 2 beer, 7 glasses of water and 2 cups of tea and a cup of coffee.

May 28
Exhausted! Worked a half day on the rocks, then drove. Only made it to Grand Prairie. Get to go the rest of the way tomorrow.
For acts of kindness: I picked up a cool rock for my neice, I did the driving, I held the door for someone and I held the elevator for someone.
I ate: a piece of french toast, a sausage, some potatoes and fruit, half of a chicken salad sandwich, an apple, a homemade cinnamon bun and pastry and half a turkey wrap with fries and veg. I drank 6 glasses of water, 2 cups of coffee and a cup of tea.

May 29
Made it home! A long day of driving and then unloading all the samples at the lab. I'm glad to be back. Managed to go to practice tonight too. I'm pretty tuckered out now. Hard to believe Farmers days is this weekend already. Where does the time go?
Really glad to see my family again. Missed Julia a lot....I even missed the dog! He's grown on me a little:)

For acts of kindness: I held the door for 2 people, I did all the driving, I dropped one of the girls off at her house so she didn't have to take her luggage on the bus, I dropped the truck off at the rental place and brought back all the odds and ends left inside.
I ate: a bagel with cream cheese, a hashbrown, an apple, half of a skillet with ham and veggies and some chinese food.
I drank a cup of coffee, 2 cups of tea and 8 glasses of water.

Long day

Drove all day. Now at Ft St John. Went to the movies...drank a soda...feel sick. Still managed to get my workout done (except form reps).

Acts of kindness....held the door x 3, did all of the days driving.

I consumed: a coffee, a bagel with cream cheese, a veggie sandwich with cesar salad, popcorn, a soda and 4 glasses of water

On the road

So I leave for northern BC early tomorrow morning. I'm going to do field work up by Willeston Lake. We are collecting samples of Triassic rock to look for biomarkers of past life forms.
I don't know what the internet will be like so if I can't blog, I'll write down my entry and post them all when I get back next week.

For acts of kindness today I let a lady ahead of me in a line-up, I let Romeo come for a car ride to the store, and I made eye contact and smiled at the timmies lady and said thank-you.

Today I consumed: a bowl of oatmeal with raisons and nuts, half an orange, a bagel with cream cheese, some left over mushroom-barley risotto and I'm going to have some toquitos and a beer while I watch a movie. I drank a small coffee, a cup of tea and 7 glasses of water. What a difference from a couple of months ago when I was drinking over a pot of coffee a day!

Happy birthday Mary Anning

For geology buffs....today is Mary Annings birthday!
If you don't know who she is, look her up. She was the first woman geologist and was the discoverer of many new species like the ichthyosaur. She was hard core!

For acts of kindness today, I gave my dog a treat, I said hi to a lady on our dog walk and I bought my husband a treat when I went grocery shopping today.

Today I consumed: a bowl of oatmeal, some strawberries and peach, some cheese and 2 buns, a cheese and tomato sandwich and some barley mushroom risotto with chicken. I drank 2 cups of tea, 1 cup of decaf coffee and 6 glasses of water.

Broadsword Form

So here is my form as per Sihing Janzens challenge this week. Apologies for a little shakiness. I'm going out of town until the beginning of next week, but I'll video tape it again when I get back.

For acts of kindness today: I let my husband sleep in and I got up with Julia, I edited a paper for a colleague of mine and I said hello to 3 people at the dog park.

Today I consumed: a piece of peanut butter and jam toast, some instant noodles with toast, half an orange and I'm going to eat some chicken nuggets with rice for dinner. I drank 3 cups of tea, 5 glasses of water and a lemonade.

Mr Leung...where have you gone?!?

I'm excited for the long weekend. We are going to take Julia to the zoo for the first time which should be awesome.
It wasn't a great turnout at class tonight though. Where was everyone? MR LEUNG! We need to practice our thing!
Thanks Sihing Donahue for the recipes!

I also ate some leftover shepards pie with bread and a piece of cheese and a couple of handfulls of sugar snap peas. Now it's time for supper....pasta with shrimp and veg and a beer.

Practice

So tonights practice was good.
Sifu Wiebe, just in case you forget, you have 2 and a half weeks for your sword.
Miss Gibbons....I'm holding up that shield before July 1st and you'd better hit it (and not me) with the dart.

For acts of kindness today: I let 4 cars in front of me, I held the elevator for someone, I gave my cat and dog treats and I fed the office fish.

Today I consumed: 1 and a half pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, a ham and cheese sandwich, some veggies, an apple, 2 pieces of cheese and 2 pieces of pepperoni and some shrimp with pasta and veggies. I drank one cup of coffee, 1 cup of tea and 5 glasses of water, and 1 beer.

MacDonalds, it's time we parted ways for good

So my Mom came to visit me this morning. She had offered to bring me breakfast and had suggested Tims. Tims is not on my hit-list so I had agreed.
So, come morning, my Mom comes knocking at my door with breakfast...MacDonalds breakfast!
I hadn't told her about my no-MacDonalds kick so she didn't know and I didn't have the heart to tell her after she went to all the trouble. So we sat there awkwardly, her eating, me staring at it. Finally, partly because I felt guilty and partly because I was curious about what it would taste like, I ate half of a hashbrown. That's all I ate honest!
It wasn't even that good.
I had absolutely no interest in the sandwich either.
So, although I failed in that I did eat MacDonalds, I also learned something....I'm not that into it anymore. MacDonalds has lost some of it's lustre for me, which is great. Now don't tempt me with a big mac though....I don't think I'm up for that test yet! But I'm making progress!

For acts of kindness, I picked Julia a flower, I gave my dog some extra lovin and I let a car ahead of me in traffic. I also made eye contact with the walmart greater and said thanks, you too when they wished me a nice evening.

Today I consumed: half a MacDonalds hashbrown, some veggies and dip with macaroni, half an orange, a big chunk of water mellon, some left over shepards pie with veggies and 2 pieces of brown bread, half a cup of coffee, 2 cups of tea and 6 glasses of water.

Sleep Awareness Month

So I think I want to set a new goal for the month of June.
I want to christen it "sleep awareness month" for myself.
One of the biggest things I've been struggling with during the I Ho Chuan year is getting enough sleep. Between trying to get all of my reps in, taking care of Julia, work and life in general, sleep has been one of the things I've sacrificed on. One of the issues is that I cut back on sleep during the week and try to catch up on the weekend, but that never seems to work. So for the month of June I am going to get up at the same time everyday (5:30AM) and go to bed at the same time every night (9:30PM) weekends included. I want to see if keeping regular sleeping hours will make me feel more rested and force me to get sleep consistently. The main area I see this being an issue (besides sleeping in on the weekend!) will be not staying up late past bedtime, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
But we'll see how it goes. It might make a difference, it's worth a try.

For acts of kindness: I helped teach a girl at work some stuff about the micro-ct machine and helped her with her sample, I taught some kids in the lab how to use our expensive cannon cameras to photograph trace fossils and I loaned out a pen when someone needed one. I also returned someones lab notebook I found.

Today I consumed: a bowl of oatmeal, 3 carrots, 2 celery stalks, 2 pieces of pepperoni, half a bowl of potato soup with a biscuit and bagel, a danish and I'm going to have some shepards pie. I drank a glass of orange juice, 3 cups of tea, a small coffee and 6 glasses of water.

August 8...be there or be square!

So I've narrowed my focus to August 8. That is the halfway point for the I Ho Chuan this year. I want to be half way in regards to my numbers so the push is on! If I push hard and catch up, then the last half should be way easier. So this weekend I'm going to catch up on my flying kicks. My goal is to do 300 flying spinning back kicks and flying side kicks this saturday. If anyone wants to join me, feel free.

As far as acts of kindness goes, I gave my cat and dog some treats and pets, brought home a present for Julia which will be good for her when we go places...she can bring it with her. I also did some laundry. I'm counting chores as an act of kindness I think. If I do them, no one else has to and they get to enjoy a nice clean living space. What counts as an act of kindness? This week I've started thinking about that more. I think the heart of it is anything that makes someone/somethings existence better. Kind of a sappy definition, but it's a start.

Today I consumed:  half an apple, 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, a ham and cheese sandwich, 2 sticks of pepperoni, a chocolate bar (dark chocolate and mint), 2 bowls of salad and a pastry. I drank 4 cups of tea and 4 glasses of water.

Acts of kindness

So this week I challenged everyone to record their acts of kindness publicly. I haven't been tracking this diligently so this will be good for me.
Today I gave my cat and dog some treats, I stayed up with Julia last night when she was sick and I bought Julia some little yard toys today and went outside and played with her with them. I also got my Mom a card and gift from my brother and I for Mother's day.
I'm going to try really hard this week to be mindful of my acts of kindness. I think it will be good for me to post them...then I will actually have to write them down.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of nutella toast, a bacon and egg breakfast with hasbrowns, a piece of fudge (Sihing Donahue...delicious!) and some pasta with veg and chicken. I drank half a cup of coffee, half a cup of tea and 6 glasses of water.

Meeting

So today we had another team meeting. We definitely need to step up the engagement we all have in the Silent River events. I left the meeting feeling that I have a lot of work to do.
Even though my month-no-coffee is over, I still haven't been drinking very much coffee. I think it's been really good for me...no stomach aches, better moods/more even energy. I think I'm going to stick to this no-coffee-thing. Maybe the odd cup here and there...but not much.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, pasta with vegetables and some spinach-filled pasta. I drank 6 glasses of water, 1 cup of tea, a small coffee and 1 beer.

Dino-awesomeness

So today was awesome!
I spent the day at a dinosaur dig in Edmonton. It was so cool. We were down by a creek bed digging for bones. I managed to find some cool things....I dug up an Edmontosaurus (a duck-billed dinosaur) jaw bone and the tooth of an Albertasaurus (a meat eating dinosaur). We also found a bunch of ribs and tendon bits. I even got to take a piece of rib home!
Totally as awesome as I thought it would be. I even got to help jacket some bone....too cool!

Ahhhhhhh....now to go to sleep and dream sweet, sweet dinosaur dreams! Well, maybe not....don't want to get eaten. But you get the picture.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, an apple, 2 carrots, 4 cookies, 4 pineapple chicken balls and some pasta with veggies in it. I drank 3 cups of tea, 6 glasses of water and half of a beer.

Dinosaurs!

So tomorrow I get to go on a dinosaur dig near Edmonton. I'm so excited! It's something I've wanted to do since I was little. I've been getting my stuff together for it...hope I don't forget anything!
It's funny how your old childhood excitement about some things never really leaves you.
It reminds me a bit of my Kung-Fu. I started training when I was still young (I think 9 or 10 maybe) and I remember the dreams and ambitions I had. It's interesting to reflect back and compare. Somethings still get me excited like a kid...like holding a new weapon for the first time and playing with it a bit.
Who would have thought that palaeontology had any bearing on Kung-Fu?

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, some leftover chinese food, some pepperoni, a couple slices of apple and some tuna casserole. I drank 3 cups of tea, 6 glasses of water, half a cup of english toffee coffee and 1 beer.

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Whew!

So my big talk is over. I ended up talking to a packed room....over 300 people! Pretty intimidating, but I  did it. 20 minutes of Montney Formation!
I'm really glad it's over. But I managed to make it there, present and make it back all in one day.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, a bagel with cream cheese, a hashbrown from tims, half a meat and cheese sandwich and a double-dog from origional joes with veggies and fries. I drank 6 cups of water and 4 cups of tea.

Calgary tomorrow

Tomorrow I have to drive down to Calgary for a conference. I have to make a presentation there. Hopefully it goes ok. It's a geology conference put on by the CSPG. After my presentation, coming back home. Probably will be a long day.
Trying to get more practice in for the demo too. Got practice again this Thursday.

Today I consumed: a piece of peanut butter and jam toast, half an orange, some banana, a cookie, some mac n cheese with veg, some spanokopita and chinese food. Also went out and got a sunday for dessert. I drank 5 glasses of water, 4 glasses of tea and a cup of decaf coffee.

Monday, May 6, 2013

Heat Wave!

How is it that it can go from being -5 degrees Celsius to +30 degrees Celsius in under a week? Only in Alberta I guess. It was so hot today! It made it really difficult to train. How do you motivate yourself to do stuff when it's stifling hot? I did manage to get my stuff done though....but it was an extra sweaty affair.

Today I consumed: a piece of peanut butter and jam toast, half a meat and cheese sandwich, a bagel with cream cheese, half a muffin and a home-made cheeseburger with all sorts of veggies on it (thanks mother-in-law!). I drank an english toffee coffee, an icecap, 2 mugs of tea and 7 glasses of water.

Week 13 progress

I haven't posted my progress lately so I thought I should. I calculated it out and this coming weekend is the 1/4 mark.

pushups: 13,774
situps: 13,366
kicks:12,624
flying spinning back kicks: 57
flying side kicks: 42
tai chi long form reps: 164
broadsword reps: 189
water consumed: 229 glasses
dog walks: 82
journal entries: 84
stories read to Julia: 116
shoulder rolls: 12
minutes of sparring: 15
veg servings eaten: 36
acts of kindness: 131
miles walked: 192.6
geology books read: 0
mineral formulas memorized: 0
kms rollerbladed: 0
papers published: 0
days no t.v.: 78
days no fast food: 108
church services attended: 6
trips to dog park: 10

I'm ahead on things like pushups, situps and kicks, but I need to bring my numbers up on my form reps. I'm on track for that though. I've increased the reps I do daily so I should catch up over time. Again, record keeping has been a major failing. I haven't been keeping track of things like water and veg intake, or my miles. Those things are hurting my numbers.

Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, 2 oranges, some salad, some macaroni and cheese with veg, fish and chips, 2 cups of coffee and 5 glasses of water.

Pandamonium

Today was the pandemonium. It was great, but exhausting. Tons of people came out and Sifu Brinker even got face-painted by Sifu Rybak (for $190 towards the charities).
Julia's getting better......slowly but surely. Poor thing.
I'm exhausted. I took part of the evening tonight for kicking and lion dance, but not many people came out towards the end. Oh well. It was still a good time. Time for bed.

Today I consumed: 2 oranges, a bagel with cream cheese, 2 pancakes, a hotdog, a nanaimo bar, some leftover roast beef, a cup of tea, 3 bottles of water and 1 beer.

Friday, May 3, 2013

Yes, the fudge was awesome Sihing!

Poor Julia's sick. We had to take her in tonight to get checked. I think she has croup again...having  a bit of trouble breathing. The doctor said it's probably just a virus, but gave her some medicine for croup. I'm sure she'll get better, but it's so hard to see her sick.
What a week!
Tomorrow's pandamonium.....hope that goes well also.

Today I consumed: a chocolate muffin, some toquitos, a tomato and cheese sandwich and some peanut butter and jam toast, a cup of coffee, 4 cups of tea, 4 glasses of water and 1 beer.

Demo practice

Had another demo practice tonight. I totally messed up my form twice. I've been practicing so much, but sometimes I just get so nervous and my mind starts freaking out and I doubt what I'm doing. Once I start second-guessing myself, it all goes downhill. I really have to try and not think about it. Then I don't get as nervous. I also need to practice more.
I need to just let my body do what it needs too because my body isn't nervous, my mind is.

Today I consumed: a chocolate muffin, half an orange, some strawberries, blackberries and blueberries,  some instant noodles, a carrot, a stuffed pepper, a corn on the cob and a tomato and cheese sandwich. I drank a cup of coffee, 5 cups of tea, 5 glasses of water and 1 beer.

Keeping busy

Trying to keep busy and keep my mind off things a bit. I was home with Julia today and the house felt a little empty without Princess. I've lost lots of pets, but it doesn't seem to get any easier, in fact it seems to get harder to let things go the older I get. Our other cat has been looking for her I think....walking around meowing.....poor guy. It will take a bit for all of us to adjust.
The one blessing is at least Julia is still too small to realize anything happened. At least we didn't have to explain it to her. I'm sure that will come one day though. One of the down-sides of having pets is you have to accept the fact you will probably out-live them. Such is life.

Today I consumed: a chocolate muffin, some strawberries and blueberries, some leftover pasta, some corn on the cob and a stuffed pepper. I drank a pot of tea and 5 glasses of water.
