So I made a smoothie today.
1 banana, an apple, some blueberries, broccoli, whey protein, milk and ice.
To be totally honest...it was kinda gross.
It didn't taste bad, but the texture was all thick but foamy. Weird.
I did drink it all and I did feel good after. I'm going to have to work on my smoothy making skills though I think....maybe more ice next time... less gross texture.
The whey protein bothers me. That's the stuff I had to drink when I was sick so now every time I taste it, I remember feeling ill and it tastes gross. Maybe if I start associating it with fun things, that will change. I'll have to start drinking it on sunny days outside I guess.
It was nice having something filling to gulp down on the way to work and when I had to rush to class, I was able to guzzle the other half so I had a full tummy. I see the benefits, but I think it will take a bit of practice to make a good one.
I know our kwoon is full of pro-smoothiests so if anyone has any advice, let me know.
Stay tuned for attempt 2.
Basic numbers: 208 kicks, 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: offered help to some people struggling with a wheelchair, took Julia on a walk when she couldn't sleep, let someone ahead of me in traffic, make Mike breakfast and packed him a lunch.
Today I consumed: a banana, an apple, some broccoli, blueberries and whey protein, a turkey and cheese sandwich, some cheese and crackers, a boiled egg and some potatoes. I drank a cup of tea and a cup of coffee and 8 glasses of water.

I tried a smoothie similar to that and found it absolutely disgusting. I'm actually drinking a smoothie right now as we speak. I get those little packages of Oikos greek yogurt and put one in my magic bullet with little bit of rainbow sorbet (about half the amount of yogurt I put in), fill the rest up with frozen mixed berries (blackberry, blueberry and strawberry) then fill the spaces to about half full with cranberry/pomogranite juice. Sometimes I'll add a cube of frozen spinach (you can't taste it). I change the juice or type of yogurt (right now I'm using key lime) or berries if I want different flavors but the amounts always stay roughly the same. You can adjust texture by adding or taking away juice.
You can swap the whey protein out for hemp seed- they are both awesomely good for you. You will have to pick the seedy bits out of your teeth though...
I concur with Sifu Rybak on the hemp seed as it is full of omega 3, which our bodies desperately need. Chia seeds are another option, but I make my "jams" with those as chia thickens quickly.
I don't use ice, just add water. I am ice-challenged for some reason.
As for tips and recipes, how much do you want? I have a good key lime pie smoothie recipe and many, many others.
Signed,
the person responsible for infecting the Kwoon with smoothies.
PS peanut butter and chocolate do not go well in a smoothie. Ask Sifu Wiebe about this one. :)
Me again,
I don't use milk, only water with my smoothies. That will affect the taste and texture. Watermelon can be used as the liquid. Whey can be tough on the system, I'd go for the hemp seeds instead.
As Lindsay mentioned, spinach is great to add and with the berries, you won't taste the spinach. Chard, lettuce, cilantro, cucumber, all sorts of greens can be used. Unless you have a powerful blender, kale can be tough.
One of my favorite smoothies is orange, grapefruit, cranberry, pineapple, cilantro. Another is pineapple, ginger, beet, and something else that I can't remember right now.
I use a powdered hemp protein and it blends up just fine. They even have flavored ones you can try. I like plain so I can mix and match. Coconut milk with juice or water makes a nice addition; I use spinach. Broccoli was just nasty. Use pineapple juice, coconut milk, banana and strawberries and go tropical (with the hemp and spinach of course:))
Oh, Sihing Lowery reminded me- coconut milk is great in smoothies, but almond milk is AWESOME! Love that stuff. And beets give it a bright red color, so it looks like it should taste yummy. My favorite is simple- hemp seed, almond milk, ice and a ton of raspberries.
Coconut milk is awesome and so are the nut milks and hemp milk (nut milks are easy to make). Coconut and nut milks are very good for you and the skin.
My smoothie from yesterday: 1 cup blueberries, 1 banana, 2 oranges, 2 tablespoons hemp seeds, 1 PACKED handful of spinach, 2 cups water.
Beets give the smoothie a nice red color and also sweetness, plus are loaded with B vitamins.
