Sad that I missed the San Sou class last night. I heard it was a great class. I wish I could go to it more consistently. I'll have to start making it a priority. I've enjoyed it every time I've gone, but it's hard when I'm there 4-5 nights already.... trying to balance everything!

Perspective
Good night at the beginner class tonight. I learned something new about a technique that I didn't know before. It's funny how you learn things when people ask you questions. It's the whole "I've never thought of why it's that way..." then you get to hear your answer. I found the answer popping out of me and found myself listening. It was cool. Different perspectives on things can definitely get you thinking and you get to find out how much you actually know (or don't know:). That's why I like teaching the beginner class. The student's have a fresh perspective on things and often have very good questions as to why we do things. It reminds me that we should be asking why we do things the way we do. Everything has a reason.
Basic numbers: 208 kicks, 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword, 3 miles (and 5 miles yesterday).

The fair
Today we took Julia to the fair. She had a great time I think.
It's hard not to get annoyed though when you're in a big crowd. As exciting as I find the fair, I also get grumpy trying to make my way around. But, seeing Julia having fun was totally worth it. Everywhere she ran she made people smile. It was nice to see the joy she has for life rubbing off on others (including me).
Her grandpa even won her a prize:)
Ate too much junk though...feel gross.
Basic numbers: rest day
Acts of kindness: invited my in-laws along to the fair, shared my water, let someone go ahead of me in line.
Today I consumed: 2 eggs, 1 sausage, some hashbrowns and a piece of toast, 3 corndogs (disgusting I know), some mini doughnuts, 1 rib, an apple and some greek salad. I drank 2 cups of tea and 8 glasses of water.

Bootcamp!
Bootcamp was awesome!
I only got to attend for half the day, but it was so much fun. Everyone pushed themselves really hard and it was great to see. My only regret of the day is that I wasn't able to bring Julia out. I think she would have loved it! Next year for sure!
Everyone's going to have the best sleep of their lives tonight:)

One more sleep!

I hope tomorrow this years batch of students make great memories too. I hope they have a good time.
It's weird to think back to when I was a sihing going to bootcamp and now I'm going to the bootcamp to instruct. Definitely a change in perspective.

Excited
I'm excited for bootcamp. It will be neat to teach the fan to people. I know it has a reputation for being girly and flamboyant, but it has a very serious history and has been used by great warriors in the past. It will be cool to show a bit of it's meaner side.
I'm excited for the other seminars as well. Walking meditation sounds really neat and I'm sure the Wing Chung one is going to be epic...not to mention the Tonfa, Flow, boardbreaking and San Sou stuff
We are so blessed to have access to so many people with such a diverse area of expertise willing to teach us. I'm looking forward to it.
Basic numbers: 202 crunches, 208 kicks, 204 pushups, 1 rep tai chi, 3 miles travelled
Acts of kindness: filled Mike's car with gas, made hime breakfast and lunch, made eye contact with a sales clerk, stopped for a pedestrian waiting to cross and gave the pets treats.
Today I consumed: a smoothy (broccoli, spinich, apple, blueberries, strawberries, whey powder, chia seeds), a turkey and cheese sandwich, a brownie, a granola bar, 4 ribs with corn on the cob and salad, 1 coffee, 1 cup of tea and 9 glasses of water

What are you doing this Tuesday?
San Sou was super fun tonight.
Although there wasn't many people there....wink wink nudge nudge to the I Ho Chuan guys!
I was worried about the class originally (I was kind of intimidated), but the class is great and everyone goes at their own pace with no pressure to do take-downs. I've been really enjoying it when I can go.
So....see you guys all next Tuesday?
Basic numbers: 204 pushups, 202 crunches, 248 kicks, 20 flying kicks, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword, 50 minutes sparring.
Acts of kindness: made Mike breakfast and lunch, gave the cat and dog treats, danced with Julia, said hi twice to people on our walk.
Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, a bagel with cream cheese, some macaroni with beans and peas and a hotdog and a half. I drank a half a cup of coffee, 2 cups of tea and 9 glasses of water.

Stupid shoulder!
Doctors appointments this week...yay! Annual check up time again.
When I went in to see my oncologist for the check up, she checked my back as said that my right side by my shoulder seems swollen. Now I have to go for a cat scan to make sure it's just swelling. Sucky.
Maybe I should have told her it could be from all the pushups I've been doing...not to mention the broadsword. I said I'd been working out, but she said that shouldn't matter.
Although last time I saw her she said I shouldn't even use that arm to stir soup.
I'm pretty sure it's nothing but my shoulder acting up. I'll see what they say after the cat scan...might have to space my reps out more or do smaller sets and give my shoulder a break. Maybe I've been pushing it too hard and it's getting damaged.
Stupid shoulder!
Basic numbers: 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 208 kicks, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword

Requirements
So I've been thinking about the requirements for third degree. I need to start practicing some of my other forms hardcore if I'm going to be ready. So much to do, so little time. At least I've been practicing tai chi. Otherwise I'd be hooped. It's funny how you can get so caught up in the I Ho Chuan requirements you forget the basic basic stuff.
Time to step it up.
Basic numbers: Rest day
Acts of kindness: dog sat my brothers dog, picked Julia some strawberries and shared my meal with someone, gave the dogs belly rubs, tickled Julia.
Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, one tims breakfast sandwich and hash brown, 2 doughnuts, some cheese and crackers, some butter chicken with fries, some bread pudding, half a banana, one cup of coffee, 2 cups of tea and 6 glasses of water. Man I ate a lot of carbs today! Kind of ridiculous....no wonder my tummy is rumbly.

Scheduling
I'm trying to find a schedule that works for me. I know that by this point I should have everything worked out, but I don't quite yet. I've been getting my numbers in, but lately it's been before bed at the end of the day. I want to try and switch it to the morning again...
I'm sure it's been a struggle for everyone on the team...trying to balance work, family time and Kung-Fu. I wish I could say I've found the answer, but I haven't yet. Although it was way easier when I did things in the morning like Sifu Brinker suggested. But that means getting up at 5:30.....:(
Hhhhmmmmm.....
Basic numbers: 202 crunches, 208 kicks, 204 pushups, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword

Making time to practice
I find summer time is the time of year you truly find out peoples priorities. It's easy to stay in and practice during the cold, dark winter. It's harder when it's sunny and warm outside and you want to go out and enjoy the world.
I have very fond memories of summer practicing in the park. Back in the day when the I Ho Chuan was an actual class, spear was taught in the summer time, in the park, so that everyone could practice at the same time. The kwoon was smaller then and there wasn't room for everyone to swing weapons around.
I think that Saturday practices are a good opportunity. It's a chance for us to come together and solidify our priorities. This year we are supposed to put our training as priority number one. But saying it and doing it are 2 different things. These Saturday practices are a chance for us to put our priorities into practice. I know that Saturday practices mean sacrifice for a lot of people....less vacation time...change in plans...less family time. But I also know the benefits that come with sacrifice. When you have to give up something you value for something else, that teaches you something. Having to choose shows you where your true values lie...not your surficial ideals that you think you value, it shows you where your true, chips-are-down priorities are.
I'm not saying that you have to sacrifice your whole life for Kung-Fu....hardly at all. What I am saying is that if you truly put your training as top priority, it won't be a sacrifice.
If you are having trouble justifying putting your training as a high priority....you should be in the I Ho Chuan. The I Ho Chuan isn't for people who have a perfect training regime...it's for people who are struggling to fit Kung-Fu into their lives. Together we get to discover the joy of bringing our lives into Kung-Fu.
Really, 2 Saturdays a month isn't a huge commitment...it's not like we're talking about every day of the week (which is what will happen if we don't start practicing soon). It's a chance for all of us to rally and say this is important to us...so important that I'm willing to change my schedule for it.
We'll have to discuss this more as a group, but I think at the end of the day it will come down to majority rules and if Saturdays work for the majority, then that's when practice will be.
I just think it would be nice for all of us to look back on this summer with fond memories of practicing outside together.
Basic numbers: 208 kicks, 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: gave the cat and dog treats, made Mikes breakfast and lunch, picked some berries for Mike and let a car in front of me when driving.
Today I consumed: an apple, a banana, some blueberries, some whey protein and chia seeds (a smoothy!), some grapes, some pasta with shrimp and veg and a small piece of steak. I drank 1 and a half cups of coffee, a cup of tea and 8 glasses of water.

Smoothy 2
I tried the smoothy thing again today. I put a banana, some blueberries, spinach and whey protein and water. It turned out ok. I didn't even taste the protein or spinach. Turned out a lot better.
I think I'll get better at this smoothy thing with more practice.
It will definitely help increase my fruit and veg consumption. While I was drinking it I thought back to where I was 6 months ago and what I was eating. Fast food garbage and potato chips. What a change! Now I drink smoothies!
The I Ho Chuan this year has sure changed stuff for the better!
Basic numbers: 265 pushups, 202 crunches, 208 kicks, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword

Smoothy attempt 1
So I made a smoothie today.
1 banana, an apple, some blueberries, broccoli, whey protein, milk and ice.
To be totally honest...it was kinda gross.
It didn't taste bad, but the texture was all thick but foamy. Weird.
I did drink it all and I did feel good after. I'm going to have to work on my smoothy making skills though I think....maybe more ice next time... less gross texture.
The whey protein bothers me. That's the stuff I had to drink when I was sick so now every time I taste it, I remember feeling ill and it tastes gross. Maybe if I start associating it with fun things, that will change. I'll have to start drinking it on sunny days outside I guess.
It was nice having something filling to gulp down on the way to work and when I had to rush to class, I was able to guzzle the other half so I had a full tummy. I see the benefits, but I think it will take a bit of practice to make a good one.
I know our kwoon is full of pro-smoothiests so if anyone has any advice, let me know.
Stay tuned for attempt 2.
Basic numbers: 208 kicks, 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: offered help to some people struggling with a wheelchair, took Julia on a walk when she couldn't sleep, let someone ahead of me in traffic, make Mike breakfast and packed him a lunch.
Today I consumed: a banana, an apple, some broccoli, blueberries and whey protein, a turkey and cheese sandwich, some cheese and crackers, a boiled egg and some potatoes. I drank a cup of tea and a cup of coffee and 8 glasses of water.

Rest day
Today I rested, went to church and spent some quality time with Julia and Mike. It was nice. Tomorrow, back to the grindstone.
Master Brinker is right about having a rest day. It makes such a difference. It's so nice to have a day where you don't have to worry about numbers and can rest your body. It definitely needs the rest.
Basic numbers: Rest day
Acts of kindness: said hi to 3 people on our walk, got Julia some sidewalk chalk and helped her draw on the sidewalk and made Mike a snack. I also baked some muffins for Mike and Julia
Today I consumed: a bagel with cream cheese, a blueberry muffin, a nutmeg muffin, some cheese and crackers, some little tomatoes and a donair. I drank a cup of coffee, 2 cups of tea and 8 glasses o f water

Thanks Sihing Chervenka!
One of my requirements for this year is to publicly record what I'm eating each day. The idea being that I want to eat healthy and if I have to tell everyone I ate MacDonalds, I'm less likely to eat it....accountability. I'm finding though, as the year goes on, that my daily blogging has started to include other things as well...basic numbers, acts of kindness and daily thoughts.
I've been finding that posting my basic numbers now has been very motivating. I've started doing it ever since Sihing Chervenka gave out the challenge to do it. On the days I don't feel like doing anything, I just remember that I'd have to post a big fat 0 and that makes me get off my butt and do something.
Anyone who is struggling with the basic stuff....take Sihing Chervenka's suggestion and start posting your daily numbers. Accountability makes for great motivation.
Basic numbers: 204 pushups, 208 kicks, 202 crunches, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: said hello to 2 cleaning staff, bought my boss a coffee and doughnut, cuddled my cat and picked Julia some strawberries.
Today I consumed: a blueberry muffin, a turkey and cheese sandwich, an apple, and orange, a banana, a piece of cheese, 2 cookies and some spinich/cheese pasta. I drank a cup of coffee, a cup of tea and 7 glasses of water.

Dragon dance and candidacy
It's been nice this week not going to practices Tuesdays and Thursdays. I was able to spend some time with my Dad tonight which was nice.
Next week dragon practice starts up again full force. We have to start getting 2 dragons rolling. I hope we get enough people. I think if we start the hard work now, we can avoid the stressful crunch later on. That would be a lot better.
I've also started studying for my candidacy exam. It's not for a year or so, but it's the biggest exam of my academic carrier so I want to be ready. Trying not to stress about it. Same thing as the dragon dance...start early and avoid stressful crunch time.
Basic numbers: 204 pushups, 202 crunches, 208 kicks, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: made Mike lunch and breakfast, made dinner for my Dad, took Julia to the park.
Today I consumed: a bowl of oatmeal (actually more like half a bowl after Julia stole a bunch of bites:), an apple, some macaroni and cheese, some cheese and crackers and some beef casserole with biscuits.

Strawberries and songbirds
I don't miss TV anymore.
When I got home from class tonight Julia and I went and picked strawberries and watched the birds at the bird feeder. That's become a typical evening for us. Before I Ho Chuan started this year, I would have come home, flopped on the couch and turned on the television. Julia would have spent tonight listening to commercials and not-that-great dramas. Instead she got to see where her fruit comes from and enjoy it. She also got to enjoy the beautiful birds.
In the beginning it was really difficult to give it up, but now I'm seeing the benefits. To be honest, I don't know how I had the time to watch TV before. It's seems like I'm always doing something now which is a nice change. Before I just watched other people do stuff.
Change for the better.
Basic numbers: 202 crunches, 204 pushups, 208 kicks, 4 reps tai chi, 4 reps broadsword
Acts of kindness: made Mike breakfast and lunch, gave the dog a belly rub, gave the cat and dog treats, picked strawberries for Julia, filled the bird feeder.
Today I consumed: 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast, a turkey and cheese sandwich, an apple, an orange, 2 chicken fajitas, a cup of coffee and 8 glasses of water.

Yay Canada Day!
Great job everyone! The demo went really well. Everyone's hard work paid off.
It will be good for all of us to take a break from practices for a bit, but we need to get back at it soon for Chinese New Years. If we start early, we don't have to go as intense which will be nicer for everyone.
Thanks Sifu Wetter for organizing this one. I hope you keep organizing things....the more experience you get the better off you'll be.
Everyone should realize that organizing something like this is a big learning opportunity. If anyone wants to grow, organizing a demo will make you.
I know some of you guys still need to do a couple of more demos....now's your chance to step up and shine leadership-wise.
Basic numbers: tai chi: 3, broadsword: 1, pushups: 204, crunches: 202, kicks: 208
Acts of kindness: wished a lady happy canada day while buying the parade candy, picked up the lettuce and candy for the parade and demo, let some people ahead of me in line, got Julia a wade pool so she could cool off. Played with the dog outside and gave him a treat. Took Buddah robe home to wash.
Today I consumed: a breakfast sandwich, 2 freezes, some leftover chili with bread and some pasta. I drank 9 glasses of water, a coffee and an ice cold pop.
