So I didn't get up and do Kung-Fu this morning.
Julia was up all night with a fever...I think it's from the shots she got. Anyway....I ended up sleeping in as much as possible. Went to work and didn't get home 'till almost 9:30. Walked the dog, ate, now blogging, then bed. Julia's still not quite right so I think I'll be up again.......
Didn't do a single pushup, situp, kick or form rep today. Sigh.
Feel kind of like a failure....but at least my numbers (excluding form reps) are up so I'm still on track with them.
Bah! What a day.
I'll have to work extra hard tomorrow.
Today I consumed: two peices of peanut butter and honey toast, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, 2 cookies, a muffin, some instant noodles with bread, a cup of tea, a pot of coffee and 5 glasses of water.

Semi-success!
So I didn't get up earlier this morning BUT I did manage to do a set of pushups and a set of kicks when I got up anyway! Tomorrow my goal is to get my 3 tai chi reps done before I have to go to work. I usually have an hour between when Mike leaves for work and Julia gets up so I want to get it done then. Lately I've been going back to bed to try and catch a little extra sleep but tomorrow no going back to bed!
It will be hard tomorrow but worth it. I managed to get my stuff all done before class tonight so I'm already done for the day! I can actually sit and relax for a bit and catch up on my school work (maybe:). It would be nice to have this time every evening so I'm going to try hard tomorrow morning.
Wish me luck!
Today I consumed: a bran muffin, some left over BPs pasta, some instant noodles, a snickers bar, some cheese and crackers with a stick of pepperoni, fish with rice and veggies, a beer, a half pot of coffee and 6 glasses of water

Time to become a morning person
So this past week or so I've ended up doing my stuff after Julia went to bed. Unfortunately, this has pushed my bedtime back. I've been getting progressively more and more tired as this has gone on. I have to get up early in the morning so I don't think this is going to work long term.
Mike and I talked about it tonight and tomorrow we're going to get up 20 minutes earlier (about 5:40 or so). That way he can have breakfast and I can get some Kung-Fu in. I think the way Sifu Brinker does things is the key: start doing stuff as soon as you roll out of bed. Not only will it get some reps out of the way right off the bat, but it will put my I Ho Chuan requirements on my brain right at the start of the day.
I think tomorrow morning will be painful, but if I work hard in the morning maybe tomorrow night I'll actually be able to get some sleep! I think I'll be better off doing things before Julia gets up instead of after she goes to bed.
Wish me luck! I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!
Today I consumed: 2 bran muffins, half a snickers bar, a ham and cheese sandwich, a ham and cheese tea biscuit and earl grey tea from tims, some BPs pasta with chicken and shrimp, 6 glasses of water and a pot of black coffee

Sparring awesomeness!
So I went to open training today and Sifu Kitchko was kind enough to come to and spar with me. She definitely gave me a run for my money (ok she pretty much kicked my butt)! It was so much fun! Got some beautiful bruises too. I have to try and get in sparring as much as I can for my requirements so if anyone else is interested next Saturday....
Speaking of which, where was everyone today (*shake fist in air*)? Barely any I Ho Chuaners were at open training. Shout out to the Chillags, the Princes, Sifu Lindstrum, Sihing Tymchuk, Sihing Lowery and Sihing Langer for being there and making open training awesome. It's inspiring to see the stuff that's going on....tiger hooks are so cool!
This Friday practice time I hope everyone comes. You guys better (*shake fist in air threateningly*)! I may be small, but I can still hunt you down and Kung-Fu you if you don't!
Today I consumed: an orange, a banana, a jumbo blueberry muffin, some leftover B.Ps pasta, some cheese and crackers, a hardboiled egg, some lasagna, 4 cups of coffee, 4 glasses of water and a beer with dinner.

Dog walking
One requirement I have this year is to walk my dog everyday and take him to the dog park once a week.
We got our dog Romeo this past summer. He was a rescue pup from SCARS. I think he is a cross between a german shepard and a collie and is about the same age as Julia. Anyway he is super smart, loving and high energy.
To be honest though, since we got him, we haven't been taking him out much. We'd take him to the dog park once in a while and he'd ride with me to the store occasionally, but once the cold weather hit he became a house dog. We do have a huge yard but I think he likes seeing the sights too. He would always watch the other dogs going for walks in front of our house and I felt bad because I knew he wanted to be out there too.
Now with the I Ho Chuan requirments, I've been taking him out every day. He loves it. As soon as he sees me go to the door at night and grab his leash he is ready to go! It's a great thing when 10 or 15 minutes out of your day can change the life of another living thing so immensely. I'm glad to make him happy. This I Ho Chuan thing isn't about just changing how many pushups or situps you can do or about getting your next promotion; it's also about changing your family (pets included) lives for the better and changing how you interact with them.
Here's to becoming a better person one dog walk at a time!
Today I consumed: a piece of banana bread, a jumbo blueberry muffin, a ham and cheese sandwich, a chocolate bar, an orange, 2 hard-boiled eggs, an order of boston pizzas past, a pot of coffee, 5 glasses of water and a beer.

Why is there a MacDonalds on every corner!?!
So tonight I had to go into work after Mike got home. I've been logging a core we have on loan at work. The core is around 250m of mudrock; I have to go through cm by cm and describe it. Very tedious but interesting too. Anyway, I was done about 8:30 so I started heading home. As I was driving I got a serious craving for McDonalds!
I used to get it a lot when I would drive home, especially if it was late. There are 3 McDonalds on my route home and 1 right by where I live. It was sssssssoooooo hard not to stop. The only thing that stopped me was picturing Mike shaking his head at me. I could actually smell it!
Terrible!
Oh well....one more notch in my McDonalds-free-belt I guess.
Today I consumed: some banana bread, some blueberries, a chocolate bar and a half, some cheese, crackers and hummas, a ham-cheese-tomatoe sandwich, some tuna casserole, a half glass of chocolate milk, a pot of coffee, 6 glasses of water and NO McDonalds!

Beginner class awesomeness
Finished most of my stuff before 11! Only have a dog walk to do and then I'm done for the day.
On another note. I'm totally inspired by what's been going on in the beginner class. I challenged them to do 1000 kicks and they did it. But what's cool is that they started doing other things too like 1000 pushups and situps, jumping exercises, etc. They are a very inspiring group and I expect each one of them to get a black belt someday. So awsome!
Today I consumed: 2 peices of bananna bread, some cheese, sausage and crackers, some bread and hummas, a hard boiled egg, some stew with biscuits, a half a pot of coffee, 5 glasses of water, a glass of orange juice and I'm going to have some tea and a pastry before bed....

Energy waning....
It's getting harder now to make myself do my stuff. Last week I popped out of bed ready to go. This week it seems I have to force myself to do everything...think I'm going down one of those chutes Sihing Chervenka was talking about. I remember last time I did the UBBT there were highs and lows. What pulled me through the lows was my pushup and situp log. It's frustrating though to all ready be struggling.
I wonder how everyone else is doing. I get to read their blogs once a week but I'm always curious when I'm doing my pushups and it's 9pm if anyone else in the world is doing the same. I wish I could be a fly on the wall of the other guys!
The banquet definitely inspired me, but this week it seems the reality of what I have ahead of me is starting to hit. Chin up and push on!
I think the problem is that this stuff isn't habit yet. I think that will take me a few weeks. Keeping my log book kicking around has helped keep me on track though. I see it lying on the table and remember that it's push up time. It's satisfying to see the numbers adding up too.
Time for some tai chi and broadsword....good thing I don't watch t.v. anymore 'cause time's becoming a scarce quantity!
Today I consumed: 2 peices of peanut butter and honey toast, one roast beef sandwich with cheese, an orange, an apple, a chocolate bar, some cheese and crackers with sausage and some stew with bread and biscuits, a pot of coffee, 4 glasses of water and a beer with dinner.

Who does tai chi at 11pm? Me!
So ya, didn't get a chance to get my reps in earlier in the day so I was stuck doing stuff 'till late tonight.
Holidays always mess up my groove. It's nice to have the day off to spend with family, but it throws off my schedule big time.
I watched Sifu Robinson's blog today. His blog really made me smile because he was just so happy. His joy is contagious! Brings back fond memories of my promotion night. So much excitement and happiness was had.
Congratulations Sifus Robinson and Regier! That night will stay with you forever.
Today I consumed: 1 bagel with cream cheese and an english toffee coffee from tims, a couple of smoked ribs with caesar salad and foccacia bread, a bran muffin, a chocolate, a cheese sandwich, 5 glasses of water and a half a cup of regular coffee.
Oh and Sifu Kitchko.....your on! Although (disclaimer!) I'm still brushing the cobwebs off of my broadsword!

Chinese new year's banquet
So tonight was the chinese new years banquet for silent river kung fu. It's my favourite event all year. I love seeing everyone all together having a good time. It definitely feels like a big family reunion.
This year was the first graduation year for the I Ho Chuan program. I was really inspired by how far some people in the program have come. Overcoming fears of performing, of sparring, of putting yourself out there....I've seen some big changes and growth. It makes you want to change too.
We had to leave early because Julia was getting tired so I didn't get to see the I Ho Chuan performances or the candidates but I did get to hear a little of Sifu Stoddart's speech. It was really touching to hear how much this year has changed her. She is one of the people that I saw evolving as the year went on. Very inspiring.
I wonder what my coming year will be like. I hope I manage to grow and evolve too.
On another note, tonight I got to drum for the lion dance. Man was I nervous! Master Brinker announced his drumming retirement and introduced me right before we had to start...I was glad I was a little hidden behind the wall! The drumming was pretty exhausting. I know it probably doesn't look that impressive, but it really taxes your arms and you don't get to rest them at all. I'm so glad that I managed to pull it off! I think that was our longest dance ever (20 minutes or so). I was happy when Sifu Rybak took over for the packets.
Before our dance, Master Brinker got us all to sign the crate we used in the dance. It was kind of cool. I wish we would have done things like that years ago. Some of the people we started with are moved away or not around anymore. It would have made for some neat memories. I hope whoever gets it in the silent auction realizes what an exciting moment in time it represents.
Congratulations to everyone who was promoted (including the candidates!) and those who won an award. Congratulations also to Sifus Clements and Playter who marked their 10 year lion dancing anniversary this year!
Thanks to everyone who helped out...this was our best year yet!

Day 6 no t.v.
Last night I had a nightmare that I watched a t.v. show and didn't realized I'd watched it until it was over. I woke up feeling stressed and it took me a few minutes to realize that I had not actually broken my t.v.-free-stint. I'm finding this no t.v-thing to be hard, especially after a long day. I just want to sit down and watch a show.
Strangely enough blogging has been helping me out with the no-t.v. thing. Having to come up with an entry every night has given me a task to fill the void. Once I'm done I usually just want to go to bed.
We are taking the step of cancelling cable so I actually won't be able to watch anything next month. That will help. Right now it's a big temptation, especially when you can hear it in the next room but can't watch....
Oh the struggle!
Today I consumed: 2 bran muffins, 1 bananna, some pasta casarole and 2 whole wheat buns, one chocolate, half a chicken quesadilla and some fries with sour cream, some ritz snack crackers a half pot of coffee and 4 glasses of water. I need to drink more water if I'm every going to make my goal!
P.S. Thanks to everyone for the comments this past week. It's nice to have such support!

Long day
So today is the day of the week I have to work late. Got home about 9pm tonight after I finished teaching 2 lab sections. I still have two sets of push-ups waiting for me and some kicks. The true test of my resolve I guess.
I also had my doctor's appointment today for the 6 month breast exam....all clear! This April will mark a year since I finished treatments. Take that stupid cancer!
Today I consumed: 1 bowl of oatmeal, an orange, 2 packs of ritz cheese and cracker snacks, a bran muffin, 2 small roast beef and cheese bunwiches, a plate of pasta casserole with a whole wheat bun, a pot of coffee, 4 glasses of water and 1 beer.
Time for some pushups and kicks....oh and tai chi too.

Yes, I ate a doughnut....mmmmmm
Today on the radio they were talking about a New Zealand lady who recently died. Her death was linked to soda consumption. Apparently she drank 10 litres of Coke a day and that contributed to her death. Now there is talk of Coke having to put a warning label on their products.
This story reminds me that it's important to exercise discipline in your diet. Just because it tastes good doesn't mean you should consume as much as you'd like. It's the three-cookie-rule; you can enjoy a cookie or three, but you shouldn't eat the whole bag. But it also highlights some of the struggles going on in our current society. It's so much harder to regulate yourself when sugary stuff is so cheap and plentiful. It's a sad story.
Today I consumed: 1 nutrigrain bar, 1 bowl of cheerios, an orange, a handful of olives, a cookie, some valentines chocolates (5 or so), a bowl of chili and a whole wheat bun, a pot of coffee and 4 glasses of water.

Day 3 no t.v.
So no t.v. today either. The house seems a lot emptier. I turned the radio on to try and fill the void.
Food eaten: 2 bran muffins, roast beef and cheese sandwich, 1 doughnut, 3 pieces of whole wheat bread with hummas (sooooo good!), some stew, a pot of coffee and 5 glasses of water.
Noticing a trend here....I drink a lot of coffee. Maybe I should start filling my thermos with hot water instead.
Tomorrow will be difficult (no t.v.-wise). I'll be at home with Julia all day and usually the t.v. is always on in the background. I don't get to sit and watch anything, but the stimulus is always there for me to look at or listen to while I'm doing my thing. I have to say even now it's weird sitting here and typing my blog in silence. It's kind of nice though too. Relaxing.
Anyway, it's something I'm going to have to get used to for another 362 days!

2 down....353 to go!
So I have to say I hurt everywhere. I woke up this morning and took Master Brinker's advice and did a set of pushups when I hit the floor. But man were they hard! I remember last time I did the UBBT I hurt for the first 2 weeks.
The pushups were especially hard today because of my shoulder/arm/chest injury. I'm trying to get it back into shape so I had to space my sets out quite a bit today. But I managed to do over 200 today which is a good start.
Oddly enough I'm having a hard time with the acts of kindness. I feel like a jerk when I count giving the cat a treat as an act of kindness. I'm trying to think back through the day to what I did. I did hold the door for someone...that must count. I'm definitely going to have to try and keep this one in the front of my mind. I think this one is hard because it seems so easy when you first think about it. But it's hard when you have to start looking at your behaviour. I've already realized that I've missed some opportunities to be kind today. I should have let that car in front of me!
I still have to walk the dog and do some tai chi, but I'm almost done. And no t.v. for a second day. I've noticed a few extra minutes here and there since I wasn't being distracted by the television. But I do miss it. I like watching t.v. because it makes me feel connected to the world. I can watch the news, watch the latest show and talk about it with others. I think that's what I'm going to find difficult about the no t.v.. But I think I'll be able to better manage my time which is important and I'll have to find new ways to stay connected. Thank goodness for the internet!
So...lastly, what did I eat today? I ate 1 bran muffin, 2 pieces of peanut butter and honey toast, a roast beef and cheese sandwich, a banana, an orange and a bowl of stew with two pieces of buttered bread. I drank a pot of coffee and 6 glasses of water. 31 days no fast food.
I'm trying to change my diet for the better and when I was making up my requirements Master Binker suggested I blog every day so that people know what I'm eating. It's a lot harder to sneak a burger when you have to tell everyone about it. So far so good.

Year of the Snake!
So today was the start of my year of the snake! In true Silent River style, I've been doing 1000 pushups and situps and 1000 sidekicks. So far I'm at 652 push ups, 1068 situps and 936 side kicks. Almost done!
This coming I Ho Chuan year should be awesome! I did the UBBT the first year we had student members at Silent River and I remember it being A LOT of work but I also remember it being very worth while. I became much stronger physically and my forms improved.
This year I'm hoping to grade for my third degree. To do so I'll have to fulfill the following requirements:
-50000 pushups
-50000 situps
-1000 reps tai chi long form
-1000 reps tai chi broadsword
-1609km run/walk/bike/rollarblade
-1000 acts of kindness
-mend a relationship
-365 journal entries
-memorize mastery and 20 mineral formulas
-1000 shoulder rolls
-365 days no fast food, pop or chips
-365 days no t.v.
-1000 flying spinning back kicks
-1000 flying side kicks
-365 dog walks
-2920 glasses of water drunk
-100km rollerblading
-5 geology books read
-52 trips to the dog park
-365 stories read to Julia
-be able to do the splits
-1 paper published
-50 church services attended
-50,000 kicks
-1 german book read
-1000 rounds of sparring
On the fast food front: 30 days no fast food! Getting easier and easier to resist.
But I should go...rest time over, time for pushups!
